The Word Clock Chrome Extension — Time in Words on Every New Tab

We built The Word Clock as a web app because we wanted time to feel like language, not like numbers. But we kept noticing the same thing: people would open a new tab just to see it. So we thought — why not bring the word clock directly into the browser?

That's how The Word Clock Chrome Extension was born. It replaces your new tab page with a full-screen word clock, so every time you open a tab, you're greeted by time spoken in words.

What Does It Do?

The extension does two things. First, it replaces your Chrome new tab page with a beautiful, full-screen word clock. Instead of seeing a search bar and thumbnails, you see the current time written out naturally — "ten twenty-seven" or "trois heures vingt" or any of six supported languages.

Second, it adds a small popup clock you can access from the toolbar at any time. Click the extension icon and you get an instant word clock without leaving your current page.

The extension supports all six languages from the web app: English, Hebrew, Spanish, French, Russian, and Arabic. Each language uses proper grammar and natural phrasing — not a mechanical translation, but the way a native speaker would actually say the time.

How to Install

Installing the extension takes about ten seconds:

Step 1: Visit the Chrome Web Store listing for The Word Clock.

Step 2: Click "Add to Chrome."

Step 3: That's it. Open a new tab and you'll see the time in words.

Customization

The extension gives you full control over how the clock looks. Double-click anywhere on the clock face to open the settings panel. From there, you can change everything.

Fonts: Choose from a curated selection of beautiful typefaces, including serif, sans-serif, and display fonts. The default is Frank Ruhl Libre, a typeface designed for elegant Hebrew and Latin text.

Colors: Set the text color, background color, or let the clock use its default dark theme. You can match it to your desktop, your mood, or your brand.

Size and format: Adjust the font size and choose between different time formats. Some people prefer "ten twenty-seven," others prefer "twenty-seven minutes past ten." The choice is yours.

Privacy

We believe a clock has no business collecting your data. The Word Clock Chrome Extension collects nothing. No analytics. No tracking. No network requests. It works entirely offline.

Your preferences (language, font, colors) are stored locally in your browser. They never leave your machine. There are no accounts, no sign-ups, and no telemetry of any kind. The extension asks for no special permissions beyond replacing the new tab page.

Why Use It?

Most people open dozens of new tabs every day. Each one is a tiny interruption — a flash of bookmarks, shortcuts, and noise. The Word Clock turns that moment into something quieter. Instead of a wall of thumbnails, you see a single sentence telling you the time in words.

It's a small change that shifts the texture of your day. The typography is clean and beautiful. The experience is calm. And if you speak multiple languages, switching between them is a single click away — a small daily reminder of how differently time sounds around the world.

Every new tab becomes a moment of pause. Not a productivity hack. Not a dashboard. Just time, expressed the way humans have always expressed it — in words.
